Can women die if they can't have an abortion?

Health and safety are significant concerns, especially when making medical decisions. But with the overturning of Roe v. Wade, you may be worried about your pregnancy options.

First and foremost, know that you won’t be denied care if you are pregnant and have a life-threatening medical issue. You will receive treatment for conditions like a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy.

Treatment for the conditions mentioned above is not the same as an elective abortion that’s commonly talked about in our society.

Sometimes, a woman must undergo treatment that treats the condition but ends the pregnancy. An elective abortion, however, occurs when she chooses to end a pregnancy, and it is not a life-saving procedure.

Understanding Idaho Law

In Idaho, abortion is illegal except in cases of rape, incest, or if a provider deems it necessary to save the mother’s life. You’ll get the treatment you need if you have a life-threatening condition.

After confirming a potential pregnancy with lab-quality pregnancy testing, it’s essential to have an obstetric ultrasound. An ultrasound determines your pregnancy’s viability (whether it is progressing normally and has a detectable heartbeat), gestational age (how far along you are), and location.

This scan can also detect a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. Miscarriage occurs in as many as 26% of pregnancies, and it means your pregnancy has ended. You may need medical treatment to remove any remaining pregnancy tissue or monitoring by a provider.

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants in a location other than the uterus. This pregnancy is non-viable, so it can’t survive. What’s more, this condition is dangerous and requires emergency treatment.

Neither of these conditions is the same as an elective abortion. Rest assured, you’ll have what you need to protect yourself if a health issue arises.
