What is an ultrasound?
An ultrasound is an imaging procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to project a visual of your uterus onto a screen. This is a non-surgical procedure and can be done in a single appointment. Ultrasounds are used throughout pregnancy to check in on the development and progression.
Why do I need an ultrasound?
Ultrasounds provide you with valuable information to guide your pregnancy decision. Most importantly, an ultrasound is used to confirm a positive pregnancy test. An ultrasound also determines how far along your pregnancy is and if a heartbeat can be detected. These two factors will greatly impact what options are available to you. If no heartbeat can be detected, it is very early in the pregnancy and you may still naturally miscarry. Lastly, an ultrasound ensures that the pregnancy is located in the uterus. Pregnancies that have implanted outside of the uterus, for example in the fallopian tubes or the vaginal canal, are considered ectopic and cannot be safely carried to term. Ectopic pregnancies can be life-threatening and you should seek medical attention immediately.
