Understanding ID’s Abortion Law
Abortion is illegal in Idaho with very narrow exceptions: if rape or incest has occurred (and the woman is in the first trimester), or a provider deems it necessary to save the woman’s life.
This ban occurred following the overturning of Roe v. Wade when the trigger law took effect. This means that in most cases, you cannot have an abortion in Idaho and would need to travel out of state instead.
Before making your pregnancy decision, you should receive an ultrasound to protect your health and learn more about the risks and side effects of abortion procedures.
Why an Ultrasound?
An obstetric ultrasound is offered after a positive pregnancy testing result at our center. This scan determines how far along you are, whether a heartbeat can be detected, and where your pregnancy is located.
You need this information to determine whether the pregnancy is progressing normally. Sometimes, a woman will experience a miscarriage, which is when the pregnancy has ended. Miscarriage occurs in as many as 26% of all pregnancies and may need monitoring or treatment.
Other women can experience an ectopic pregnancy, which occurs when the fertilized egg implants in a location other than the uterus. This condition is a non-viable pregnancy and poses a serious risk to your health. It requires emergency treatment.
Following an ultrasound, you can learn about abortion, adoption, and parenting. You’ll get the facts needed to weigh each option, and we’ll answer any questions.
