Understanding Idaho State Law

Abortion is currently prohibited in Idaho except in limited circumstances, including when the woman has reported rape or incest to law enforcement, or when necessary to preserve the woman’s life or health. Outside of these exceptions, abortion is not legally available in the state.

Because of this, most women in Idaho who seek an abortion would need to travel out of state. That means costs extend well beyond the procedure itself and can include transportation, lodging, time away from work, childcare, follow-up care, and any emergency treatment needed afterward.

Insurance Coverage for Abortion Pills

Idaho law prohibits most private insurance plans from covering abortion except in cases that align with the state’s legal exceptions. Idaho Medicaid similarly does not cover elective abortion, except in documented cases of rape or incest or to preserve the woman’s life.

For women who travel out of state, coverage depends entirely on the insurance plan and the laws of the state where the procedure is obtained. Many plans still exclude elective abortion coverage.

This means the full cost is often paid out of pocket, ranging from several hundred to over a thousand dollars when travel and related expenses are factored in. Abortion pill-related expenses depend heavily on these factors and the individual provider.

What to Do Before Making Any Decision

Before considering costs or coverage, confirming the details of your pregnancy is essential to weighing options with your health and safety in mind. At Sage Women’s Center, we offer private pregnancy testing at no charge, and clients may qualify for a limited obstetric ultrasound. An ultrasound may confirm how far along you are, where the pregnancy is located, and whether it’s progressing, all of which directly affects your options and your health.

Our team also provides evidence-based options education covering parenting, adoption, and abortion so that you can make a fully informed decision without pressure.
