How Early Can You Have an Ultrasound in Pregnancy?

An ultrasound is crucial to learning more about your pregnancy and confirming details needed to make educated decisions. However, if you’ve just received that positive test, you may wonder how soon an ultrasound can offer confirmation.

Sage Women’s Center will help you learn the ins and outs of this scan. Additionally, you may qualify for a limited obstetric ultrasound following a positive pregnancy test at our center.

When a Pregnancy Can Be Detected

According to Cleveland Clinic, an ultrasound can detect an embryo as early as 6 weeks gestation. However, a heartbeat may not be detected until about 8 weeks gestation.

It’s important to know that an initial ultrasound isn’t typically scheduled until about 7 to 8 weeks gestation, though some providers prefer them to be scheduled later.

When you make that appointment, the healthcare provider will ask you several questions, including the date of your last period and when you received a positive pregnancy test. This information helps them pinpoint your next steps, including the type of ultrasound you’ll have.

In early pregnancy, a transvaginal ultrasound is performed to offer the clearest images. With this scan, a wand-like device called a transducer is inserted gently into the vagina.

Later in pregnancy, abdominal ultrasounds are performed, with the transducer moving over your abdomen.

If you’ve just received that positive test, this scan is your next step. We’ll help you gather important information about your pregnancy and health so you can move forward.
