When Roe v. Wade was overturned in June of 2022, it led to confusion as women tried to learn what the ruling meant for them.
Now, almost two years out, there has been more clarity as new laws have passed across the United States. Read on to separate fact from fiction.
1. States Have the Power to Decide Abortion Laws.
As a result of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the Supreme Court ruled that the U.S. Constitution did not confer a right to abortion, overturning Roe v. Wade.
With Roe overturned, the power to set abortion laws went back to the states to decide. It did not outlaw abortion nationwide.
Over the last two years, states have been debating, holding votes, and proposing abortion laws and bans. Many states have experienced shifts in either direction.
2. Ectopic Pregnancy and Miscarriage Treatments Are Not Abortion.
Abortion laws do not impact women’s access to ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage treatments.
Ectopic pregnancy happens when a pregnancy implants outside of the uterus. This type of pregnancy can threaten the woman’s life if left untreated. The embryo is unable to survive due to the placement.
Miscarriage is when a pregnancy ends naturally on its own before the 20th week of pregnancy. Sometimes, treatment is necessary to prevent infection and other complications.
Elective abortion, on the other hand, is the ending of a progressing pregnancy. This type of pregnancy has not ended, and it’s located within the uterus with a heartbeat.
Therefore, women can still receive ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage treatments when needed.
3. Women Can Still Receive Life-Saving Treatments.
The overturn of Roe v. Wade did not impact women’s access to life-saving treatments.
Many states, including Idaho, provide an exception for abortion when it’s necessary to save the life of a pregnant woman.
