Infection After Abortion: What You Should Know
When you undergo an abortion procedure, you’ll either have a medical abortion or a surgical abortion.
Medical abortion uses drugs to end a pregnancy. Mifepristone blocks progesterone, a hormone needed for the pregnancy to grow. Without it, the uterine lining thins, and the pregnancy detaches and ends.
Surgical abortion can use drugs, surgical instruments, and/or suctioning to end a pregnancy. The type of procedure you will have depends on several factors, including your gestational age (how far along you are).
Abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding occur after both types of abortion. However, how will you know if you have an infection?
Signs of Infection
First, remember that you know your body best. If something feels abnormal, seeking medical attention is a proactive choice.
If you’ve had a medical abortion, signs of a possible infection include:
- A fever lasting more than 24 to 48 hours
- An unpleasant vaginal odor
Signs of infection after a surgical abortion are similar. You may have:
- Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
- Prolonged fever
- Worsening pain
Another complication that can result in an infection is an incomplete abortion, which occurs when some of the pregnancy tissue remains in your uterus. Following up after any abortion procedure and paying attention to any physical changes are crucial steps to protect your health.
